- The Fighting Group. This was the Command Group and was entirely carried in armoured vehicles.
- The Office Group. This was the executive group
- The Administrative Group.
The Fighting Group.
This contained those personnel and vehicles essential to the control of an action. It was necessarily very mobile and well protected.

The main changes to the Fighting Group were
- A halftrack was added. This carried a Wireless set No19 and a Wireless set No19 HP. This was for use as an alternative command vehicle when the use of the Royal Signals Armoured Command Vehicle was inconvenient or inappropriate.
- The three Subaltern Liaison Officers now had Scout Cars instead of Cruiser Tanks. These would give greater mobility but decreased protection. This had been a feature of the Tank Brigade.
- Eight Observation Post Tanks were added. These were of the same type as the tanks of the brigade and were for the use of Royal Artillery Commanders and Forward Observation Officers (often the same person), and for Forward Controllers from the RAF. The user would supply all personnel except the driver mechanic and gunner operator.
- All Headquarters tanks except Command Tanks were fitted with a Wireless set No38 for communication with infantry.
